Don't place Pidgin shorcut inside a folder (Start menu > Programs > Pidgin shortcut)

Reported by: srippon Owned by: datallah
Milestone: 2.0.1 Component: winpidgin (gtk)
Version: 2.0 Keywords: start menu install

Description

When Pidgin for Windows is installed could the Start menu shortcut be placed directly under the Programs folder (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\) and not within a new folder (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Pidgin\) as it presently is?

Why?

If the Pidgin folder only contains one item does it really need a folder of its own? Having this unnecessary folder adds an extra action (click or point) the user must make every time they start Pidgin from the Start menu.

Dear datallah

Sorry I'm a little confused. In your message were you saying that my suggestion violates MS guidelines? If so I was wondering if you could please show me the guidelines it violates? I did a quick search around and found the following MS Vista start menu guidelines (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa511447.aspx):

  • Eliminate unnecessary folders by putting programs at the top level or in a single product folder. Generally, your program should have a single shortcut on the Start menu.
  • Create a product folder only if your product is a collection of individual programs (three or more), and users think of your product in terms of that collection.

I had trouble finding the Win XP guidelines.

Also in your post are you saying what I've suggested is pointless and annoying? If so why is it pointless and annoying? I realise it isn't a major issue but I thought it would be something that could be easily changed and would save a lot of users a lot of effort.

Chat soon.

Cheers,
Scott.

Putting the Pidgin entry in a subdirectory violated the guidelines, which is now fixed as of the changeset listed. What got posted by Daniel was the commit message for that changeset.

However, I am also curious what guideline he's referring to.

phroggie: srippon posted the link. It's new for Vista. I'm glad they finally got a clue and fixed the guidelines.

Just to clarify, I was referring to the previous behavior of the installer as "pointless and annoying," not your suggestion.
