Pidgin windows turn black

Reported by: bastafidli Owned by: datallah
Milestone: Component: winpidgin (gtk)
Version: 2.0.1 Keywords: black screen

Description (last modified by bastafidli) (diff)

I have Pidgin 2.0.1 with the GTK it installs. If I leave Pidgin open for a while, the content area of the buddy window and all the chat window turns black and I cannot see anything. Only when I click with the mouse in the area, where are the menus, I will see the popup menu, but not the menu bar. I haven't found any way, how to restore the windows so that I can see the content. I have to quit pidgin and restart it. I tryied to cleanly reinstall it after uninstalling GTP and Pidgin itself and cleaning leftover files on the disk. It didn't help. This wasn't happening with 2.0.0. This is happening constantly after a few minutes using Pidgin.

That is weird.

Do you have anything unusual like virtual desktop software or some wacky graphics drivers installed?

What does the debug log (the pidgin -d one, not the Help->Debug Window one) say when this happens?

I have attached the log. I do not have any unusual software, just a reguralt WIn XP installation with onboard S3 Unichrome PRO IGP video.

I'm having this same issue, but pidgin launches with all the conversation windows black.

Does this still occur on WinPidgin? 2.5.0?

yes it does. I haven't tried disabling the plugin, I dont even know if I have it enabled.

Changed 2 years ago by bernmeister

Can you check if you have the Transparency plugin enabled (Tools -> Plugins)? If so, disable it...restart Pidgin and see if there is any difference.

I can confirm this still exists in 2.5.0 and if I disable transparency plugin the problem goes away. I do not even have to restart pidgin. As soon as I disabled the plugin the chat window was no longer black.

Can be reproduced, along with the transparency workaround, on 2.5.2.

Changed 14 months ago by ckc11

Still can be reproduced in 2.5.8 on windows xp. Turning the transparency plugin off works as a workaround. Closing and reopening doesn't do anything, the chat windows get restored as black. Only after clicking around and trying to highlight the text in the black windows will bring it back. But it works only for a short while before turning black again.

Looking at the plugin list in 2.5.8 I cannot see a transparency plugin. Is this a third party plugin? If so, this ticket should be closed and the relevant plugin author be notified.

Changed 14 months ago by datallah

The relevant plugin is a windows-only plugin that is distributed with Pidgin.
