passwords containing German umlauts (ü ö ä Ä Ü Ö ß) do not work with ICQ

Reported by: Karlo Owned by: MarkDoliner
Milestone: Component: ICQ
Version: 2.5.0 Keywords: Umlauts password
Cc: flip

Description

Entering a password that contains any of the above mentioned "Umlauts" does not work on Pidgins MS Windows version (2.0.2 german) when using an ICQ channel. This error was already in GAIM. After changing the password into one w/o "Umlauts" ICQ worked. ICQ allows these types of passwords.

This isn't going to be windows specific.

Is this is the Change Password dialog?

I don't believe the ICQ protocol allows passwords with umlauts in them. What would you expect Pidgin to do if you tried to change your password to something with umlauts in it? Show an error message that says the password must be only letters and numbers?

it's not possible to set a password with umlaut during registration. only letters and numbers are allowed. so if you set a password with umlauts with pidgin, you have to retrieve a new password, otherwise you can't login. so there should be a validation for a valid password.

Given the comment by flip, perhaps Pidgin should at most do a check for a valid password (not contain umlauts).

If so, move to Patches Welcome?
