Personal Avatar shows up blank black to yahoo messenger users.

Description

Hi!

I have Pidgin 2.0.2-3.fc7 and not even in this version am I able to select an avatar to use on mu Yahoo! account.

I can see others' avatars but they can't see mine, but a black blank picture instead.

It has been quite a very long time since I was able to set up an avatar on my Yahoo! account using Pidgin, actually, I can't remember it ever working on Pidgin... only on gaim.

Please check it out and see what's wrong.

Thanks.

P.S.: My pidgin client show me as using the selected avatar, but other yahoo users don`t see it.

This is certainly not always the case, my buddy icon appears just fine to users of the native client.

I wonder if there are constraints about icon size or format that we are not enforcing correctly.

Tried both at home and at work... both Fedora Core 7, from fedora installation then updated with 'yum update pidgin'.

I`m having this problem from aloooong time...

this shows up in accounts.xml:

                <settings>
                        <setting name='use-global-buddyicon' type='bool'>1</setting>

                </settings>

and this shows up in my blist.xml under my account (I added myself in the list):

                        <contact>
                                <buddy account='Enygma2002_ro' proto='prpl-yahoo'>

                      notice this->>>   <setting name='icon_checksum' type='string'>-1881250623</setting>

                                </buddy>
                        </contact>

Why the negative checksum?

After a couple of days of magically working(no update, no nothing, all of the sudden)... the avatars are not displaying to others... AGAIN.

This time... I can see myself changing my avatar, but as I said... other yahoo users still don't.

Server issue?

  Changed 3 years ago by nogah

I have the same problem as you do. I 've used Gaim 2.0.0beta and Pidgin on my Ubuntu. And my avatar have never displayed correctly on my friends' Yahoo Messenger. All that my friends can see is a black avatar.

This is quite funny, in a sick, sad way...

I reported this bug in earlier tickets before and still no resolution.

This ticket is older than one month now and no one bothered to review it... having the default 'minor' priority.

Dear Pidgin developers, this is a 'MAJOR' bug, noticeable, deranging and quite embarrassing actually...

Please do something about it... I have friends suffering from the same issue and as I said in an earlier reply to this ticket, IT HAS WORKED, for a couple of days without me requiring to update or anything so if it's an error I can fix, please provide a resolution or just fix the damn thing.

Sorry about the tone, but I`m very frustrated about this.

Please provide a solution.

Thank you.

Of course this is a minor issue... having the buddy icon not appear isn't by any definition a major problem.

This doesn't happen to everyone - it works fine for me, so identifying what exactly causes the issue is going to be key in getting it fixed (which is what you need to do because you are the one experiencing the problem and apparently is causing "suffering" for you).

Keep in mind that we have a limited amount of time - your tone is not at all helpful and is more likely to hinder rather than help this alleged issue get resolved.

Ok, updated to '2.1.1-0.fc6' ... but I`m using fedora core 7...

What I noticed: - I got the buddy aliases from windows which is quite nice :) - My avatar displays as the windows avatar ( from yahoo messenger ). ?????

This is getting weirder and weirder...

Thanks for the reply and I mention again... At least 2 other friends of mine... one using FC7, the other using Debian experience the same issue.

It would be nice though for this ticket to get a status or a milestone.

I know the implications of developing a large scale application... so ( not like I'd have any choice :) ) I'll just wait and see what surprises the next update brings :)

At least can I get some pointers as where to look for identifying the issue?

Thanks.

Replying to Enygma:

Some useful questions to think about: Does this happen for some particular images? Is it related to the size of the image? The dimensions? The format?

It would be nice though for this ticket to get a status or a milestone.

The milestone itself isn't useful - I can assign it to 2.2.0, but it'll simply get pushed if it isn't fixed by the time we release 2.2.0. It is far more useful to worry about why this is happening, that to worry about little arbitrary things like milestones and priorities.

At least can I get some pointers as where to look for identifying the issue?

See my questions above.

It is worth noting that this also appears to happen to the native messenger client -I was playing with some things and noticed the same issue. If this is accurate, there may be nothing that we can do about this.

i want to use pidgin, but knowing that the reply to this problem is a "theres nothing we ca do about this", i'd just use other IM programs for now, til this prob is fixed. its a shame its got all the nice stuff except for this one, which is quite a major problem to quite a number of users. By the way, Miranda IM doesnt have any avatar issues with yahoo messenger users, thinking it's Miranda - plain and simple. hope this gets fixed. its quite a shame after all the fancy stuff.

Hey there.

Some useful questions to think about: Does this happen for some particular images? Is it related to >the size of the image? The dimensions? The format?

All shapes and sizes... tried png, jpg, gif... same stuff.

It is worth noting that this also appears to happen to the native messenger client -I was playing >with some things and noticed the same issue. If this is accurate, there may be nothing that we can >do about this.

Switched to windows and avatar changed with no problem, came back to linux, tried changing `couple of times and I still had the same windows avatar.

Any other ideeas? :(

If you request your Info, by right clicking on your yahoo name in the buddylist ... does it complain, that "adult"-profiles are not supported at the moment?

Just an idea ...

My avatar doesn't show on my friends' yahoo messenger, but it appears if my friends use http://webmessenger.yahoo.com. Moreover, when I change my avatar, I can find the upload link of the avatar in the Debug. If I paste that link into a browser address, I can see my avatar correctly.

  Changed 3 years ago by averagecanuck

My avatar will not show either. I'm using Windows XP pro SP2. I've tried many picture, even reducing them to 60x60px.

  Changed 3 years ago by averagecanuck

Just as an update. I downloaded and installed yahoo messenger. Loaded up an avatar. Nothing changed on my friends computer. I had him restart his machine and the avatar showed up after that. I loaded up Pidgin with the same avatar and had my friend restart yahoo messenger. The avatar seemed to stick. However if I tried to change the picture it would blow the avatar away and he'd get just a black screen again.

Update:

I updated Pidgin to 2.2.0 and my friends started to see my avatar.

I suppose I can call it fixed, at least on my side.

Hope no more problems arise.

The original reporter's problem is fixed, so I'm going to close this. If anyone else is still having problems then please file a new ticket.
