Unicode characters don't display properly

I've noticed that whenever I try to type Japanese characters in Pidgin, they don't show up properly. (Every character just appears as a box containing four circles.) The friends I send messages to tell me that they can see the characters just fine despite this (they are not using Pidgin), but I cannot. And if anyone tries to send me a message containing Unicode characters, I also receive only a sequence of the strange boxes with four circles in each. Please add Unicode support!

We have supported Unicode for years. You are using a font which does not contain the proper glyphs for the symbols you are typing.

I also have this problem when a friend sends Traditional Chinese characters to me with MSN Live Messenger 8.5. It only occurs on Windows platform (Windows 2000 SP4), with the same font (AR PL New Sung Mono) used in FreeBSD or Ubuntu Linux.
