AIM buddies splitting out of merged contacts and creating an orphans group.

Reported by: Pixelpaws Owned by: MarkDoliner

Version: 2.5.8 Keywords:

Description

At random intervals, any contacts I have with two or more AIM accounts merged together have all but one of those accounts split off into an orphans group. I can't find any specific trigger to cause this action; they're properly merged when I quit Pidgin and break when I start it. It also does not happen consistently, but occurs maybe 30% of the time.

Is this still happening in Pidgin 2.5.8?

  • status changed from new to pending

Is the name of the group "Orphans" or something else (if so, what?)? Is it always the same buddies?

  • status changed from pending to new

It is the same buddies when this happens, yes. Deleting and recreating the accounts doesn't change the behavior.

Is it the Orphans group?

Yes, the name of the group is always Orphans.

My reading of the code indicates this should happen when the name of the groups the buddies are in isn't valid UTF-8 *and* Pidgin is unable to convert the name from your current locale to UTF-8 *and* from ISO-8859-15 to UTF-8.

What is the name of the group the buddies are in before?

And, could you possibly obtain a packet capture of this occurring (the login attempt). You'll need to use tcpdump or wireshark (a filter on "port 5190" should be sufficient) and if you have any questions about the process, you can head to #pidgin on irc.freenode.net.

Once you get the log, ideally Mark would be able to take a look at it, but I can certainly try. If you don't want to attach it to a public ticket, you can email it to me (my nick -at- pidgin.im); if you do that, please reference the ticket number in the email.
