XMPP contacts rapidly flip between groups, spam server

Description

Under certain (but not uncommon!) circumstances, libpurple gets into a state where a contact is in more than one group. It then proceeds to spam the XMPP server with queries about that contact. This results in disconnects from Google Talk, and Adium is currently banned from our corporate intranet.

libpurple is more than capable of handling buddies existing in more than one group, so that fact is not likely the issue. What is going on is not yet something I have determined.
