Windows or Linux? Post the debug log please.

Windows XP SP3 (removed 2.4.1, installed 2.5.0 without restarting). Logs into most other account types, but not .NET. Then I get the error dialog:

X( Unable to add user.

   Unknown error (205)

             [ Close ]

And then the main window seemingly shows the "Connecting..." status ad infinitum, at least until I choose to disconnect from the account management window.

I am running Pidgin 2.5.0 on Windows XP SP2 and when I try to connect to MSN I get no error message, the connecting icon appears but never manages to connect. I can connect without any problems to the Yahoo and ICQ networks. This worked without any problems in the previous version of Pidgin; and looking at the change log there has been an upgrade to the protocol, taking MSN to version 15. Could this be the problem?

It might be unrelated, but when I start Pidgin 2.5.0 up I get the following error: Unable to add user Unknown error (205)

This did not happen on the previous version of Pidgin.

All you people, are you getting "Our protocol is not supported by the server"? If not, this is clearly not your problem, so don't just randomly comment on it!

I have the same problem with 2.5.0 version when trying to connect to MSN, "Our protocol is not supported by the server" error. I just upgrade from 2.4.x. I'm running Vista Enterprise SP1 32bits. Attaching my log.

I suspect this is caused by some software firewalls that do IM filtering. Try disabling that in whatever firewall/antivirus software you use.

Changed 2 years ago by deryni

One particularly common IM filtering firewall is AVG8.

Changed 2 years ago by shartley07

couple of things

1) this is not a firewall issue 2) i am now using an alternate msn plugin (WLM) and it works fine

this means, the msn plugin is having an issue -could be blocked accounts or other non-std settings for contacts (the msn plugin doesnt know how to handle)

just my 2 cents

the WLM account manager for msn is definately superior to the one that ships with pidgin

Changed 2 years ago by khc

what WLM plugin are you using?

Changed 2 years ago by shartley07

Changed 2 years ago by khc

that is not a WLM plugin...

msn-pecan and our msn plugin use different msn protocols, we use a more recent one, if you get back an error saying "Our protocol is not supported by the server", it suggests to me that something on your side is blocking it.

msn will not connect after installing pidgin 2.5.0. Fails with error message: "Our protocol is not supported by the server."

msn connected with previous pidgin version on same day. Log file attached (http://developer.pidgin.im/attachment/ticket/6641/lkfraser_pidgin_msn_issue_08262008.txt).

The problem occurs when I am connected through my job network proxy (yesterday msn connected successfully with pidgin previous version within same network). But it works when connecting through a client proxy. I am attaching both debug logs.

that just confirms that someone your end is blocking the protocol version that we are using, there isn't something we can do about that. Can you connect with the official client (8.1 or something)?

It now works for me. I have no idea why. I didn't install any updates or plugins, but this morning it is now connecting to MSN just fine.
