Unable to retrieve MSN address book

Reported by: Turtledude Owned by: khc
Milestone: 2.5.5 Component: MSN
Version: 2.5.3 Keywords:
Cc: nellery, nico@…

Description

I can't login to MSN as I keep getting this error. I searched for a similar problem but only found one from an old version of pidgin. I can't login as I keep getting this error about the address book however, windows messenger works fine so I don't believe it has to do with my msn account.

This is a server-side outage affecting a number of people and the official client. The client you tested is likely using an older version of the MSN protocol unaffected by the current outage.

So the issue is with the MSN server and not pidgin? Because pidgin is still unable to login to Msn. Correct me if I am wrong.

That is correct.

Thank you darkrain, hopefully someone can fix this soon so we can get onto msn!

Thanks again for the reply.

I'm not having a problem with logging in on the current version of WLM, but I am unable to telnet to the servers. Should've checked that before posting a ticket.. Sorry guys.

I'm getting this error too on 2.5.3

I can connect just fine in Microsoft Messenger for Mac 7.0.1. Not in Adium, though. (I'm writing an Adium blog post about this problem.)

Changed 20 months ago by boredzo

More data:

  • Adium 1.3.2 uses MSNP15 and cannot connect.
  • Adium 1.3.1 uses MSNP12 from MSN-pecan and can connect.
  • Adium 1.2.7 uses MSNP9 and can connect.

I'm not sure what protocol version Microsoft Messenger for Mac 7.0.1 uses. It's not necessarily the same as MSN Messenger 7 for Windows.

I wonder if this has anything to do with it:

22:56:41: (Libpurple: soap) POST //abservice/abservice.asmx HTTP/1.1

The problem, as determined by rob-to86, is this, which appears in your log (I'm not going to bother fixing the munging):

><parameterFault xmlns="http://www.msn.com/webservices/AddressBook">System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x8004920A): Certificate cannot be found. Certificate required for the operation cannot be found.

The issue is apparently limited only to MSNP15. The official clients fall back to older protocol versions, which is why they mostly continue to work.

Definitely not a Server-Side issue as I'm currently logged in with the official WL Messenger client as well as the msn-pecan plugin, but the default MSN plugin fails to work.

Changed 20 months ago by boredzo

HiltonT: MSN-pecan uses MSNP12. The problem only happens on MSNP15.

Changed 20 months ago by dfszb

This is not a server side issue: msn-pecan works: just install it and change, from pidgin account dialog, the protocol from 'msn' to 'wlm'.

Changed 20 months ago by moojix

Ubuntu (8.10, pidgin 2.5.2) related workaround as mentioned above: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pidgin/+bug/316252 switch from protocol MSN (MSNP15 used by pidgin/purple) to WLM (MSNP12 used by msn-pecan).

We initially thought this was a server-side issue; now we know it is a server-side change that requires the client to send additional data that we do not currently send. It's outlined here. We are currently working on a fix.

The server omega.contacts.msn.com doesn't work, but with contacts.msn.com works again... Until the fix can we 'rotate' these two servers somehow for a better workaround?
