Pidgin crashes after loading MSN list.

Reported by: blackstar Owned by: khc

Description

I loaded up Pidgin today, and when I came back to the computer, I got the Visual Studio JIT stating that an unhandled exception occurred in pidgin.exe. Since there are no debugging symbols in there (unless I compile the whole thing myself) I couldn't exactly see where the problem occurs, but it's probably a nullpointer since the program is trying to read from 0x00000000. I then got 2.6.1, which gave exactly the same problem. I killed the .purple directory, and reinstalled Pidgin, and it still gave me the same problem.

I then got the debug version, and the RPT is included showing problems with strlen.

Edit:

I tried Mercury as well, just to get online to talk to people. And it gave the following error message :

"You are logged out because there was a problem with the connection with the MSN server (64.4.16.34:1863).

End of file/stream"

Now this might be useful information since it would explain a nullpointer on a string, indicating a change or something in the MSN protocol.

Please follow the instructions to get a debug log and attach it to this ticket.
Set the PURPLE_VERBOSE_DEBUG environment variable before starting Pidgin to get the log.

Ok, I got the problem solved. However before you close this ticket ;)

I took a look at the logs and saw that in debug.log the problem stops after a certain contact (skortmans) this guy is from my school and he uses the kMess client. I deleted him from my contact list to see if this was the problem, and after I deleted him (and Pidgin crashed again) I restarted. Pidgin has been running fine ever since.

Maybe this is a problem between Pidgin and kMess?

(In b4a95ea62b81a06ffc1993912471c511b786efdd):
Ignore SLP invites if they do not contain all the required fields. The latest development KMess client appears to send a MsnObject? that's just full of NULL's, triggering this crash.

Fixes #10159.
