#10385 new plugin request

Send XMPP "gone" chat state notification on window close

Reported by: psessoms Owned by: deryni
Milestone: Plugin Suggested Component: XMPP
Version: 2.6.2 Keywords:
Cc: ZeiP, mooninite

I think this is new with 2.6.x. In 2.5.8 and before, window close sent "gone" as indicated in XEP-0085. Now, it sends "active."

I know some people don't like them, but gone notifications are really very useful, especially in hybrid environments incorporating bots. (XMPP was designed with the potential for programmatic interaction in mind.) I'm wondering if the removal of this feature is by design, if it is a bug that will be fixed, or if it will come back as an option. I notice that 2.6.x still *displays* "gone" notification; it just doesn't send it now.

Yes, the removal of the gone notifications is intentional. I and several other Pidgin developers detest the feature.

Thanks for the reply. Will you accept a patch that makes it an option?

  • Milestone set to Plugin Suggested
  • Type changed from defect to plugin request

This request is best implemented as a plugin. Currently we as Pidgin developers are not interested in implementing it. This ticket remains open as an invitation for someone to write a plugin fulfilling the request.
A plugin can do this if someone wants them back (though I really do not understand why someone would want this), virtually every user seemed to use this to get angry at people they thought were "ignoring" them or "insulting" them and/or was used to annoy other people by forcing a new window to pop back up by waiting for the notice to say "bye" or send some other message.

  • Summary changed from XMPP conversations should not send "active" chat state notification on window close to Send XMPP "gone" chat state notification on window close

The removal of "gone" was intentional, but shouldn't we also not send "active" when closing the window (if the user is not currently paused/not typing)? I haven't looked to figure out why that happens, though.

Edit: added a 'not' to "the user is currently paused" (We need to send something when in those states)

Deryni, thank you for the update. We will create a plugin.

As to why I want this feature: I support a multi-operator help desk system created for libraries, libraryh3lp. It relies heavily on the gone notifications for its routing system. Pidgin has been one of the main clients in use with libraryh3lp since the beginning, and we already have one pidgin plugin specifically for other libraryh3lp features. We've compiled 2.5.9 for our users currently.

You likely want to upgrade to 2.6.3 as a number of issues have been fixed since them (among them some security fixes). Depending on chat state notifications for that sort of thing seems like a poor way to have designed the system, it would seem that presence (even specific presence to a specific routing bot) would be much better, but ok.

Deryni, the routing system relies on presence heavily in addition to the gone notifications. There are really far too many routing scenarios to get into here.

A lot of your concerns seem to have to do more with the *display* of the notices ("has left the conversation") to humans rather than just sending them. I do realize that if you stop displaying them in Pidgin and start sending them again, buddies using non-Pidgin clients will see a gone notice if their client displays them.

At any rate, once again, we will create a plugin, and thank you for replying.

Any update on this? I do not see a plugin with this option, yet. Believe it or not, the office I work in actually loved this feature and is disheartened that it is now gone. Perhaps the feature should have been defaulted to off - then it probably would have never been removed.

Sorry, mooninite, I should have returned to update this ticket. In the end, given many other development priorities for libraryh3lp, we decided not to make a plugin to do this and instead worked the routing system around it.

Replying to psessoms: My memory about this is coming back -- the change ultimately flowed into Adium too, and we didn't really want to get into needing to write something special there too.

I've attached an example of how to do gone's for XMPP. My office is happy again.
