#10461 new enhancement

lazy coloring of IRC "people in chat room" box

Reported by: kowey Owned by: deryni
Milestone: Component: pidgin (gtk)
Version: 2.6.2 Keywords:

The list of people in a chat room is rather akin to a Christmas tree.

Perhaps a more useful use of colours would be to only assign them whenever somebody says something. Only the few people who actually talk get colours (using the same scheme as before) whereas lurkers get boring old grey.

I actually really really like this idea. My one concern is that if (at the moment) there is some vague consistency of coloring for the same people in the same room over multiple instances of pidgin (or joins of the room) then this patch would make that much less likely since speaking order would affect things. If there isn't any consistency (and I seem to recall people complaining about that being a problem) then I don't see any down-sides to this idea.

Perhaps you could have the best of both worlds (highly factored code vs per-use-case behaviour) but just assigning the colours first and then only turning them grey/back in a post-processing phase?

That certainly sounds reasonable, assign the colors as normal just don't activate them until the user actually speaks. I'm not sure how easy that would be to do as compared to simply not assigning colors until people speak which should be looked into.
