Everybody is suffering from this. It`s a major defect and yet you catalog it as minor.

Its very disturbing not being able to benefit from the avatar option, just cause you cant get a damn xml working.

It is visible, it is disturbing, it is a bug. Please fix it.

I was expecting it fixed in 2.0.1 and I`m very disappointed it wasn't.

Good luck.

P.S.: referring to yahoo.

actually, looking at the history of this bug, *we* never categorized it as anything before just now. "Minor" is the default setting.

On AIM/ICQ, the icons do show up after messaging people (one or two messages in each direction) who are using libpurple clients, but not before that. But it works well for MSN.

First, this behavior is not true for me. I am currently using Pidgin version 2.0.2. Second, buddy icons from other clients just show up automatically; you don't have to send any messages to see them.

Is this still a problem? If so, can you paste in a debug log from Help > Debug Window of you trying to login.

Is there a reason you changed it to no longer pending? Did the log file I attached help?

comment:13 Changed 12 years ago by seanegan

  • Owner set to seanegan
  • Status changed from new to assigned

"pending" means we're waiting from feedback from the reporter. When that feedback is received, the pending flag is removed. If an issue is pending for two weeks, it's automatically closed as an abandoned issue.

  • Summary changed from buddy icons from other Pidgin clients don't show up to AIM Buddy icons don't auto-fetch reliably

I think there are actually three issues here.

Yahoo should be fixed, and the comments here seem to agree.

The MSN one, I believe, is a known compatibility issue with newer MSN clients that requires a protocol update. The MSNP14 branch should work for this.

The AIM one is the only one that I think is still pending. I'm adjusting this bug to reflect that.

I checked in a change that fixes this for ICQ--it'll be in Pidgin 2.2.1. Is anyone still having this problem with 2.2.0? If so, please list which protocol.

It is fixed for ICQ (also, the official ICQ client can fetch my buddy icon), but still broken for AIM.

This really does work flawlessly for me

schoen: Is it still not working for you? Does it work for ANYONE? (You can force Pidgin to re-fetch icons by exiting then moving your ~/.purple/blist.xml out of the way. When you're done testing you might want to exit Pidgin again and move the file back into place to be sure you don't lose any data)

If it's only not working for you for certain people, do you know what client they're using? Could it be a problem with their particular buddy icon?

comment:3 in reply to: ↑ 2 Changed 12 years ago by nynevergoingback

I'm still having problems with it fetching new buddy icons. At least with MSN. But I don't have the time to fully characterize the problem right now. Just know that this is not fixed.

nynevergoingback: seanegan said, "The MSN one, I believe, is a known compatibility issue with newer MSN clients that requires a protocol update. The MSNP14 branch should work for this." And that updated code has not been released yet.
