Pidgin 2.7.0: XMPP name problem with facebook buddies

Reported by: indigo3k Owned by: deryni
Milestone: Component: logging
Version: 2.7.0 Keywords: buddy name chatlog

Description (last modified by indigo3k)

Using Pidgin 2.7.0 with standard XMPP protocol on WinXP

XMPP names for facebook buddies now (with 2.7.0) have a "-" sign prepended. The prevents pidgin from finding previous chatlogs for those buddies.

No anomaly found with buddies from other networks.

  • Component changed from XMPP to logging
  • Status changed from new to pending

Please follow the instructions to get a debug log and attach it to this ticket.
The '-' sign comes from the server (why Facebook is doing that, I have no earthly idea). Is the issue that autocompletion in the Buddies->View User Log does not work or that opening a chat window with a buddy and selecting "View Log" does not work?

Or is the issue that you are now missing the history from before the "-" was prepended? (There's no way to fix this -- as far as Pidgin/libpurple/the XMPP prpl know, these are really new buddies).

  • Status changed from pending to new

If, facebook is now prepending a "-" instead of a "u", they are surely to blame. I was not using pidgin for 2 days, and it just seems to be a coincidence of changed Facebook behaviour together with the pidgin update today.

Sorry for the false alarm.

However, It might be nice to tell pidgin-Facebook user about this fact, and give them a guideline to change the directory names appropriately to find their old logs.

the directory names for logs in

have been something like "u1234567890@…" These logs are still present!

New logs are created in directories like "-1234567890@…"

Old logs are expected to be inside new-named directories, of course, and thus are not present in the view of pidgin.

  • Resolution set to invalid
  • Status changed from new to closed

That might be something for the FAQ (which is a wiki, so you can add it if you'd like), but I don't think Pidgin should be displaying a notice like that.
