#11950 new defect

Contact names not updating

Reported by: stevehanler Owned by: EionRobb
Milestone: Component: unclassified
Version: 2.7.0 Keywords: xmpp alias

Description (last modified by stevehanler)

Whenever one of my contacts changes their name, Pidgin isn't updated with the new name. I looked in my blist.xml file and found that all of my XMPP contacts have aliases set. I have never set aliases for any of my contacts. I also deleted and re-added my XMPP account and the contacts were immediately assigned an alias. The contact section in the blist.xml file looks like this:

		<buddy account='713@myxmppserver/Work' proto='prpl-jabber'>
			<alias>Contact Name</alias>
			<setting name='last_seen' type='int'>1274191432</setting>

This is a Switchvox Phone Server that has a Jabber/XMPP server built in. This also happens with my Facebook account and my Google Talk accounts.

Is this the intended behavior? How am I too receive updates to contact names if Pidgin is setting an alias for my contacts?

I have also found that if I manually delete the aliases for my contacts (Right click>"Alias">Backspace>Enter), most of my Facebook contacts will only have a bare Jabber ID.

I just had a contact change their name on our XMPP server and it changed in Pidgin so I don't know why that wasn't working before. The issue with Facebook showing only bare Jabber IDs is still present though.

A workaround for the Facebook issue is to just delete and re-add your Facebook/XMPP account. This forces Pidgin to recreate the contacts.

Facebook contacts names do not change. If any of my Facebook friends changes their name, that change is not reflected in Pidgin.
