#11957 new defect

Smiley panel load delay

Reported by: eac Owned by: datallah
Milestone: Component: winpidgin (gtk)
Version: 2.7.0 Keywords:

Description

In Pidgin 2.7.0, the smiley panel you call from the conversation window, is showing up slower then in previous versions. I think all of them, because now is the first time I've noticed this and installing back 2.6.6 confirmed me this observation. This "issue" is more noticeable in a slower PC, for ex if in my desktop the difference is only 1-2sec, in my netbook is about 5sec. And we are talking about 2GHz Core2Duo/3GB RAM vs 1.6GHz Atom/2GB RAM

Which OS are you using?

Win 7 And right now I've tried a few versions back. All are OK, like I was used to be. The last one has that strange delay in showing up.

I've tried the 2.7.1 version hopping that it'll solve the problem, bot no. So I'll move back to 2.6.6 which is working just fine, "like all the other old versions" (I've said this before). Just hope you'll not implement too fancy features from now on to not make me sad because I can't use it ;)

All the best!

...and I'll check from time to time to see if something happened in my neighborhood... I was used to use the last version every time, so it is a little bit frustrating, but... life is a b....

  • Component changed from unclassified to winpidgin (gtk)
  • Owner changed from rekkanoryo to datallah

This is caused by the newer GTK+ using the built-in Windows functionality to load images instead of the various external libraries.

There isn't much that we can do about it.

Well, but can't you roll back? I know, is good to be new, but if it doesn't work like it should, then maybe is better to be a little older (and maybe wiser ;) ) I've noticed something else - using a custom smiley theme I used to use (with animated smileys) they all have a specific way of animation. One is showing one frame at each 2 seconds, another plays entire animation (10-20 frames) in less than a second. This way, the theme is absolutely useless. Don't have to mention that in version 2.6.6 and below all is OK. Finally, I'm with you since the first version of Gaim so I don't give up easily. I'm sure you'll find a solution. After all, is not just me using this piece of s... (sorry, I want to say OS), named Windows

All the best!

Theoretically, we can go back to the previous versions but there lots of reasons not to do that.

You're free to use the old GTK+ 2.14.7 version yourself by downloading it from here and replacing the contents of the <Pidgin Installation Directory>\Gtk with the contents of that zip file.

OK, you're the man! It's OK now :) But tell me please, what will I loose, using this gtk version instead of following you in your upgrades? Is there any chance that at some moment in time the gtk version from then to get rid of this delay?

all the best!
