Adding new Contact to MSN caused all Contact Names revert to email addresses

Reported by: dangb Owned by: QuLogic
Milestone: 2.7.11 Component: MSN
Version: 2.7.0 Keywords:

Description

I added a new contact to my msn account using 2.7.0 and upon them sending the request to be added it reverted all contacts which did not have the 'Nickname' field filled in on their Live profile to now appear as just simply the email address they used as an account. Previously they all had user names which were set by their own accounts which displayed correctly in Pidgin even in 2.7.0. It was not until the request was received that Pidgin mass changed them all over to the email address. It appears as if it is polling for this field in the new protocol but there must be some other fallback mechanism with which MSN transmits the username if the user is not using the Live profile system. Also why would it iterate all previous contacts when adding a new one to my account?

Please follow the instructions to get a debug log and attach it to this ticket.
I suspect it will fix itself when you login again, though (for buddies who are online, at least.)

You are correct in that restarting the app and allowing it to reprocess online buddies has been slowly resolving it. However I am unable to attach a debug log for when it happened since I wasn't running the debugger at the time. I will make sure to use the debugger next time I attempt to add someone to my MSN list and post it here.

You do not use a debugger to create a debug log. The debug log is the contents of Help->Debug Window (which must be open before the problem starts) or the output of 'pidgin -d' (which you likely want to redirect to a file somewhere).

When I said debugger I meant the Debug Window trace logs which helpfully only show up if you are expecting problems and have the window open already. I recreated the issue using an alternate email account that I configured an MSN account for and then requested an add on my regular account. Same problem. Logs attached. All personally identifiable information (ie: email addresses and user names) redacted and replaced with <REDACTED> and <USERNAME_REDACTED>. I am <SELF_REDACTED> and the new account added is <REDACTED_NEW_USER>@<REDACTED_NEW_USER_TLD>.

Question for all of you who are experiencing this problem. Has the buddy you added ever appeared online?

(In b28bde636d271fd90efcba54f25ecf7af2e5331b):
Use NULL for the display name when parsing the the privacy member lists. The display names on this list are totally bogus and outdated, causing old names to show up when somebody adds you to their list. Along with the previous commit, this will ignore the display names from there.
