Can confirm that this problem arrived with the 2.7.6 version and has not changed in version 2.7.7. If original poster does not respond I will look into getting a debug log this weekend.

I've got the same problem. Here's what the debug.log says when an custom emoticon is received: (22:15:30) msn: S: SB 008: MSG xxx@… .:%20Kîtty%20:. 92 (22:15:30) msn: S: SB 008: MSG xxx@… .:%20Kîtty%20:. 201 (22:15:30) msn: switchboard send msg.. • Keywords p2pv2 added

Probably related to p2pv2 headers so I add that as a keyword to keep track on this ticket until p2pv2 is implemented.

I can not receive custom smileys on my MSN account. I get a white place holder with a red x.

I had this issue in 2.7.6 and still have it in 2.7.7. This is an issue for me in XP at home and Windows 7 at work. I was thinking it was because I had upgraded Pidgin, but I got a virus today on my work computer and reimaged it. I still have the same problem.

I have not had a problem with crashes, but will install the debug symbols and post the log as soon as I have something.

comment:9 Changed 6 years ago by Arnvidr

This seems to work for me in 2.7.7 at work on Windows 7, but not at home on my Gentoo linux machine. I downgraded to 2.7.5 at home and that worked, so I don't see how it could be related to something not implemented yet.

comment:10 Changed 6 years ago by sydro

I can confirm this bug! I have 2.7.7

comment:11 Changed 6 years ago by damic

I can say that the bug not presist in 2.7.5, something has been changed from 2.7.5 to 2.7.6

Check the changes please

comment:12 Changed 6 years ago by christophski

I can confirm this, and it's very frustrating!

comment:13 Changed 6 years ago by romangoro

I can confirm this too, both under windows Xp and 7, and Linux (ubuntu 10.10). I can also test whatever is needed under linux. I don't have a build environment under windows.

Same problem here since 2.7.7, now with 2.7.9 on Ubuntu 10.10 AMD64.

Same thing for me on 2.7.9, I got white space with a red x.

comment:25 Changed 6 years ago by mileshu

Will this fix be available with 2.7.10?

comment:26 Changed 5 years ago by samsonluk

2.7.9 on XP sending custom emoticons to MSN client also failed if the emoticons are new and not available in MSN client end.

comment:27 follow-up: Changed 5 years ago by sajber

Same on 2.7.10.

White space with red X

same problem, but only on windows, no problem with xubuntu :/

comment:33 Changed 5 years ago by supercip

Same problem with windows. Tips: I remember most probably that with the 2.6.6, or older version it works.

comment:34 Changed 5 years ago by salinasv

There is no need to say that the problem still exist, the ticket is open just because the problem is still there. If the ticket get closed and the problem is not fixed, then it would be helpful to confirm that the bug is still there, not before.

Please, stop "me too" until some developer comment here saying it's fixed or the ticket gets closed.

comment:35 follow-up: Changed 5 years ago by Agent24

I wonder if this is related to the fact MSN file transfers don't work any more either?

comment:36 in reply to: ↑ 35 Changed 5 years ago by salinasv

Replying to Agent24:

I wonder if this is related to the fact MSN file transfers don't work any more either?

Yes, it is. Emoticons, file transfers and some other stuff uses the same P2P protocol which MS changed whithout us noticing it at time. Now we need to reimplement the whole new protocol.

comment:37 Changed 5 years ago by icmp_request

I've noticed that using a version up to Pidgin 2.7.5 "fixes" the problem. If you disregard any security issue, please try downgrading to this version for a "temporary fix" on the problem.

It may be a "shot in the dark" this guess of mine, but the problem seems to be on MSNP16 that the developers included on pidgin 2.7.6 and latter (see changelog).

I have compiled and installed from source later versions, including the latest to this date (2.9.0) and on none of them worked emoticons, file transfers, image display, etc.

But when I compile and install from source 2.7.5 which doesn't support MSNP16, everything works fine.

I don't know how close the developers are to figure out the MSNP16 issues, but as to this date this ticket has 7 months already, it could be effective to consider to downgrade to the previous MSN protocol until this issue is solved. Emoticons, file transfers, display images, etc. are far more important than multiple logins.

Regards.

comment:38 Changed 5 years ago by salinasv

Actually, a "better" work around would be to set the MSN Protocol to 15 in msn.h, it will disable all MSNP16 features and keep the MSNP15 ones so you can do emoticon and p2p, but multi presence.

We have figure out the issue, as I have said, we need to finish to reimplement the new p2p protocol. Sad thing is that MSNP16 and P2Pv1 are incompatible.
