Reported by: Reign Flame Owned by: elb
Milestone: Component: IRC
Version: 2.7.11 Keywords: channel disconnects

Description (last modified by elb)

Every 5-10 minutes I am disconnected from this IRC channel, and I have no clue why. I disabled all other Pidgin accounts and plugins and it still persists. Debug info:

I don't see a disconnect in this debug log. There's nothing here that looks suspicious.

Replying to elb:

What is this then? I had this running while it kicked me out of the channel, and that's what it had in the debug.

Oh, hah, I just overlooked that, because there's no numeric before it. There's no warning for that, the server is just terminating you; nothing we can do about that. (Because we don't know why.) If you're behind a NAT or home gateway device, it may have a full connection table and be terminating the connection. (This is particularly likely if you're using BitTorrent? or similar filesharing protocols.) Other than that ... tough to say.

comment:5 Changed 8 years ago by elb

Note that you're not being kicked from the channel, the server is disconnecting entirely. The fact that you're not in the channel is a side effect of losing your connection.

comment:6 Changed 8 years ago by elb

Note also that you did NOT disable all plugins, that purple-splitter message is from a plugin.

Oh! What plugin is that from? I have use a torrent program, but that wasn't on during the first bug. What is a NAT?

comment:9 Changed 8 years ago by elb

That log shows the same disconnect with no indication as to why.

I don't know what the name of the plugin is, but I assume it has "splitter" in the name. It's a third-party plugin.

NAT is a method that lets you hook more than one computer to the same Internet connection via a single IP address. Normally NAT services are provided by a device between your computer and "the Internet". It's often called a "home router", "cable router", "dsl router", "home internet gateway", something like that. It's probably made by Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, or the like. It may be built into your cable/DSL/whatever modem.

comment:10 Changed 8 years ago by Reign Flame

Yeah I have a router, but don't most users? It's comcast service :/

comment:11 Changed 8 years ago by Reign Flame

I don't understand why it's doing this, it's only with IRC in Pidgin. I am not wirelessly connected to the router, even though it has that capability, I am connected through ethernet. It's a D-LINK DIR-601. My ISP is Comcast that us DCHHP (not PPoEe) that is always connected, and doesn't need "Keep Alive" or "Timeout" settings.

comment:12 Changed 8 years ago by sdumitriu

Same thing happens to me. More details:

  • D-LINK DIR-601 wireless router connected to a cable modem
  • Happens both when using the Wireless network and an ethernet port on the router
  • Doesn't happen when connecting directly through the cable modem
  • The connected period varies widely, from one minute to several hours, but is usually around 5 minutes

One idea that comes to mind is that the automatic port forwarding configuration fails. I tried to enable DMZ for my IP, and so far it seems to work, but it's still too early to call it a success.
