#1426 new defect

drag&drop file on conversation window not always transfering

Reported by: andrixnet Owned by: seanegan
Milestone: Component: winpidgin (gtk)
Version: 2.6.4 Keywords: drag&drop file transfer image picture

This is an issue coming from the GAIM days and still persists in pidgin-2.0.1.

Initial Comment: Wingaim.

If I drag&drop a file onto the conversation window, gaim starts the "send file" process.

However, if the file is a picture, I get the question : "do you want this image to be buddy icon for this buddy?"

Though a bit odd, this functionality, I would expect it to function *only* if I drop the file on the icon region. However, regardless where in the conversation window I drop it, if it's a picture, i get this question.

This practically denies sending files via file transfer if they are images and I want to drag&drop them.

I have to use the menu. :(

On another note, tell me if I should post this as another ticket.

The dialog is asking me if "would you like to set the buddy icon for this user?" - which makes me understand that it means to set the avatar for the user in that conversation window. Which is ok, under the functionality of "set custom icon".

However, since "set custom icon" is only available from right-click on the avatar picture in the conversation window, I would expect that this drag&drop feature would work this way also, only on the avatar picture area. Over the rest of the conversation window area I would like to expect the file transfer to begin, just like with other types of files.

Even the above suggested dialog may be a hamper because of the expectation for drag&drop to just work, no confirmations.

The reason you would see that message is if the buddy (or protocol) you dragged the image onto doesn't support file transfer.

Otherwise you'd see "You can send this image as a file transfer or use it as the buddy icon for this user."

I'm sorry, but I've already tested that drag&drop over conversation window of a non-image file and pidgin DOES send that file (file transfer). same buddy, same protocol. (and that buddy assured me he did not change IM client software).

The transfer occurs automatically, no other confirmation is requested.

while we are discussing this feature, wouldn't it be preferable for the conversation box to gain focus after the image has been added?

also, how about letting multiple images be dragged over at the same time. :-)

In that case I would add about letting drag&drop multiple files over the conversation window (whatever types are those) and start transfering them. (instead of only a single file at a time.

(anyway, at least Yahoo supports multiple drag&drop to initiate transfers)

Which protocol are you seeing this with (and is it with a buddy that is in a contact with a combination of protocols)?

Using only one account (obviously one protocol), that is Yahoo.

When dragging multiple image to the message window, they should immediately be sent to that user (as it was in some Gaim versions). It does not make sense to ask whether I want to set *one* of them as the new buddy icon.

In my opinion this dialog could be removed entirely as well.

I still vote for this in 2.6.1.

User should be asked if he/she wants to set buddy icon if the image is dragged on the information area, not conversation area.

  • Keywords drag&drop file transfer image picture added
  • Version changed from 2.0.1 to 2.6.4

I vote again for this in 2.6.4
