#14612 closed defect (fixed)

OpenOffice spell dictionaries no longer available as .zip files; installer fails.

Reported by: cschanck Owned by: datallah
Milestone: 2.10.2 Component: winpidgin (gtk)
Version: 2.10.0 Keywords: spell dictionary installer
Cc:

Description

It looks like OpenOffice? no longer provides the dictionaries as .zip files -- downloaded them always fails with a timeout, even trying to go to the site in question using a web browser or ftp tool.

OTOH, the dictionaries are now published as extensions, here:

http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/dictionaries

They are .oxt files, which are just renamed .zip files with some extra stuff. Unpacking one into the appropriate directory and restarting enables spell check to work again. But a random user would probably not be able to figure this out.

I suspect the installer could easily be modified to fetch the new ones.

Many thanks for finding this out. Worked perfectly for me. Hope this gets fixed in the installer soon.

This happened also with 2.10.1, when making a custom install and the installer yields an error about downloading dictionaries from http://ftp.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/contrib/dictionaries/ru_RU.zip (for example).

The dictionaries I specified were ru_RU.zip ru_RU_ye.zip ru_RU_yo.zip

— but ftp.services.openoffice.org is not there anymore.

After some looking, the new address for dictionaries is http://download.services.openoffice.org/files/contrib/dictionaries/

I do have to add that the latest update to any dictionary is from 23.02.2009, which is two years ago, and the oldest dictionary file that Pidgin can use is from 18.01.2004, which is seven years ago.

  • Resolution set to fixed
  • Status changed from new to closed

Update the win32 spellcheck downloading to go through the redirector php script on pidgin.im. Currently this will just forward to a oo.o mirror that still has the dictionaries available, but it also gives us the flexibility handle such situations better in the future.
