#14660 new defect

No font formatting appears in conversation; XML present in chat history

Description

In a conversation with a buddy who has custom formatting on his font, I am no longer seeing his formatting in the conversation window even though I have "show formatting on incoming messages" checked in preferences. We both use Pidgin 2.10.0 on windows 7 over the gmail/XMPP protocol.

Our chat history is now cluttered with XML, which appears to suggest that I am receiving the formatting information but it is manifesting as markup code instead of the displayed formatting (chat logs are set to save in HTML).

In the conversation window I see an incoming message like this (with no formatting applied):
(11:10:33 PM) [buddy]: strange..

But when I open the chat history to see the same message, I see this:
<im:html xmlns:im='http://jabber.org/protocol/xhtml-im'><xht:body xmlns:xht='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><xht:p><xht:span style='font-weight: bold;'><xht:span style='color: #2a1e00;'><xht:span style='background: #9ca2ab;'>strange..</xht:span></xht:span></xht:span></xht:p></xht:body></im:html>

Could this be a result of some malformed XML on the sender's side or could the problem be on my client side?

I'm not a pidgin developer, but a guy at my site had a similar problem. He could see formatting when composing a message but not for incoming or outgoing messages in the conversation window, even though incoming XMPP formatting instructions were there. It turned out to be the "Conversation Colors" plugin - if that's enabled, make sure "Ignore incoming format" is not checked. HTH.
