#15409 new enhancement

Allow users to ignore XMPP groups

Per #14785, Facebook integration does not respect the groups users great in Pidgin, instead putting all Facebook contacts in a group called Facebook Friends. This is apparently because of developer wishes to prioritize RFC specifications over usability.

Please allow users to override XMPP rosters and group XMPP-sourced friends into arbitary groups that may not match what XMPP says. may be an example.

Just want to cast my vote as being against this. I don't think the functionality is important enough to justify the extra code and UI complexity.

I wrote a simple patch that gives the user an advanced XMPP option to ignore group changes from the server, if local buddies exist.

Google Talk already has this tweak. This server never sends group for buddies. Therefore all grouping is managed locally by pidgin. Unfortunately the old hack prevented name changes from propagating into the roster.

These changes are really minimal, but deliver huge benefit for users that want to build groups and meta contact for all their buddies, including facebook friends.

If the patch exists and is OK with the devs can it be implemented? Would make a lot of users happy to give them that option.

Will the patch work on 2.10.7?

PLEASE implement this. This (buddies being moved back to the default server-controlled group on restart) also affects the Slack chat service, and is bloody annoying.

People have been opening bugs about this issue for at least five years now.
