Have you tried this plugin? https://github.com/philipl/pidgin-indicator

I would like to try it on 3.0.0 and gtk+3.

Subscribing, and adding kde5 (I tried to search for that first and almost created a duplicate ticket).

https://github.com/philipl/pidgin-indicator << works like a charm. autoreconf -i, make, sudo make install.

Subscribing and voting up. This defect makes me use a secondary tray for the Pidgin tray icon only.

If the user list is closed and no tray contains the Pidgin icon, Pidgin will exit, which makes workarounds utterly necessary for Plasma 5.

pidgin-indicator seems to work in Plasma 5, but I can't get it to hide, and only show on new messages. Does anybody know how to enable that behaviour?

Just upgraded to F22 with KDE 5 (or KF5) and same problem here.

is this going to be fixed or not?

And well? Is this going to be fixed or not?

Who knows. No one has submitted a patch and an explanation, right? GUI-specific bugs are myriad and are a pain for developers to test. If you're lucky, one of the developers uses Plasma. It seems that that may not be the case.

If you think this isn't getting enough attention, feel free to post a bounty on Bountysource or elsewhere.

FWIW, I use plasma and I am interested on this change. I would LOVE to have desktop integration (at least gnome, unity and KDE, obviously the more, the better) on 3.0.

Unfortunately, I don't have that much time and I have to prioritize what to actually do, and I think stabilizing 3.0 will have higher priority.

If someone can bring a nice patch, be sure I will take a look fast.

Replying to Drino:

This is pretty stupid, but try middle clicking the icon.

Sorry, I may have been unclear. Middle-clicking the icon hides/shows the pidgin window. However, what I wanted is for the icon to be hidden normally, but visible when there is a new message. IIRC correctly this was the behaviour in KDE Plasma 4, but it doesn't work now in KDE Plasma 5.

The plugin "Pidgin indicator" works fine for Pidgin 2.10.x.

Is there any solution for Pidgin 3.x? (Personally I think, that the tray icon is a core functionality, which should not only be handled by an external plugin.)

comment:16 Changed 3 years ago by neufeind

Works for me without the plugin on recent KDE-version, using pidgin 2.10.11. I don't think it's Fedora-specific on my side, so maybe you can give it a try on a fully updated KDE-system?

I am using

KDE Frameworks 5.19.0 Plasma Workspace 5.5.4 Qt 5.5.1 openSUSE Tumbleweed (20160228) (x86_64)

I also read somewhere, that legacy tray icon support was added in Plasma 5.x. So I probably have a configuration issue or a distribution specific issue.

Recent state here is: Newer Plasma (maybe depending on specific QT version?) brings support for the legacy systray method that pidgin uses. Tho it does not support the way pidgin lets the icon blink, so blinking does not work.

At the same time, pidgin-indicator seems to be broken with Plasma 5.6.4 It only shows an icon of a pidgeon head. With 5.6.5 it even got worse, it now cannot blink, too, so basically this plugin is useless, it just shows the pidgeon head icon that does not respond to any events happening.

If pidgin developers insist to not move to SNI compatible systray icon, they might look into their blinking method, perhaps there is a way to work around this.

Hi windseeker, Thanks for the update on the current state of the situation.

I just want to add here that pidgin developers never said they/we don't want to move to the new specification for system notifications. In fact, I do want to get to it and I do want to use my time to get it done. Unfortunately, there are other things I'm working on. This one is pretty high in my list of priorities.
