#16647 new enhancement

Group messaging - Not available as plugin

Reported by: xaxas Owned by: deryni

Version: 2.10.11 Keywords:

Description

Several requests for group message ability have been closed with the statement that Pidgin will not support this feature "because of potential for abuse" and that the functionality is supported by plugins. After searching the current Third-Party Plugins list, I am unable to find any plugins that would give me this ability, and the plugin that is normally referenced when closing those other requests is no longer available:

http://plugins.guifications.org/trac/wiki/groupmsg

I fail to see how potential for abuse factors into this feature being not included in Pidgin, by that same logic, the entire program could be leveraged to abuse the different protocols it connects to.

https://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/5049 < this ticket was worded differently and so has thus far escaped the "wontfix" fate.

I was unable to find any mention of this functionality (pro or con) in the FAQ. I would like to reopen discussion about this feature, as it seems to be a fairly regularly requested feature that is essentially ignored.

Oddly I found I have a plugin for Group Message

"Group IM" v2.3.0, by Stu Tomlinson.

There is another version floating in the ether:

Thread reply here gives link: https://pidgin.im/pipermail/support/2011-October/024291.html

which attempts to link to THIS page: http://ttran.me/blog/2009/04/30/pidgin-plugin-pidgin-groupmsg_251-piwener2

don't know if the ttran.me site is trustable, never used it.

Oddly I was surprised the one I already had wasn't defaulted to "checked" in the plugins list. Good luck! -TG2
