#17372 new task

ICQ: Protocol is deprecated and now dead, protocol replacement is needed

Reported by: Wohlstand Owned by: MarkDoliner
Milestone: Component: ICQ
Version: 2.12.0 Keywords: ICQ OSCAR-dead Need-New-Protocol
Cc: rfc1036, iromeister, beubeu1010

Description (last modified by Wohlstand)

At the end of 2018'th Mail-Ru company (a current owner of ICQ network) have announced the shutdown of "legacy" protocol support completely (through a direct letter to every user who is using legacy protocol) and recently (December 28, 2018) they are have shouted down all servers are supported the old protocol. Pidgin now reports that it can't connect to the BOS server. The only way to rescue ICQ support is the making of an update of the ICQ plugin to use modern protocol. It's the good case that complete source code of official ICQ client is available publically: https://github.com/mailru/icqdesktop

New protocol does use of encryption, has the support of stickers like Telegram and others, calls, etc.

There are a lot of people are don't want to use official ICQ client and prefer to use any custom one. Pidgin is one of the clients that supports ICQ. Until OSCAR servers were deprecated officially and nuked down.

Still working for me.

Hubby received this a few weeks ago and I received it today. We both use icq on pidgin for rpg stuff and as of today it has stopped working on Pidgin. We're using Pidgin V2.13.0. Hopefully a protocol upgrade for Pidgin is in the works?

Received March 9th, 2019

We are discontinuing support of older ICQ versions and other unofficial clients. To continue chatting, you need: 1. Link a phone number to your account here https://icq.com/18052473/verifyphone?sc=73517620 2. Log in using the official ICQ client which can be downloaded at https://icq.com"

I had the exact same problem as Chronia and did the following and was able to get my new ICQ number connected in Pidgin: This page refers you to the ICQ Third-Party Plugin https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ThirdPartyPlugins

Clicking on the link for ICQ WIM: https://github.com/EionRobb/icyque

I did the Windows login info by installing the 2 required DLLs to the Pidgin directories. Then in Pidgin selected ICQ WIM instead of ICQ for the Protocol

It looks like I'm connected but the task bar icon is not green and looks like it's not connected. I still don't have any contacts to test it out though.

Same problem as Chronia & tried KimWilson?'s suggestion. No go, still getting "Unable to connect to BOS server: Connection refused." when trying to start Pidgin.

Any other suggestions? Or does anyone know if a "fix" for this is being worked on?

ThirdPartyPlugins lists a replacement plugin, "ICQ WIM (IcyQue?)". Perhaps it's worth a try?

Yes, it was and I did. For some reason, it's not working for me.

I'm running Windows 10 and have the most current version of Pidgin installed, as well as the most current version of ICQ.

ICQ alone works fine. Trying to use Pidgin just gives the same error "Unable to connect to BOS server: Connection refused" at Pidgin start-up/login.

Thanks for the reply, I really do appreciate the suggestion.

Same here. With the "ICQ WIM" plugin/protocol it shows me as online on my end but keeps disconnect/reconnect every few seconds. Hubby can't see me as online, nor can I see him as online. So the "ICQ WIM" option is unfortunately a bust :(
