#2030 new enhancement

Group contacts from a protocol

Description

I have a problem:

I have sapo.pt contacts and phone.im.sapo.pt contacts (mobile phone numbers). I have both distributed by groups, but I see all of them in their groups - having repeated contacts: one for sapo.pt and the other for phone.im.sapo.pt! I would like to view phone.im.sapo.pt contacts grouped together because having both protocols mixed makes me much confusion.

What can I do?

Another problem is that I have dozens of SMS contacts and

while

I usually have relatively few people online (IM chat) and I don't usually need to send SMS (the IM chat contacts are more of an every day use than SMS ones),

I have each group filling up the screen because I can't hide the SMS contacts.

The only BAD workaround I could use would be to create a duplicate of every group of contacts (one for IM chat contacts and the other for SMS). The doble of the groups is a good solution? I don't think so. From 10 to 20, it's not very pleasant for the eyes.

  1. S.: I would like to suggest you to try SAPO Messenger: it has the ability to filter contacts by: 'chat only', 'sms only' and 'both' (in Portuguese) for a SAPO Messenger account.

:) Merry Christmas!

do u feel this is a dupe of ticket #7056 ?

No, I don't.

Firstly, because I am talking about contacts in only one account. Secondly, because I am not talking about exact same contacts, but contacts with the same alias. For instance, image I have a friend with the nickname xormlite which has the e-mail xormlite@… and the contact 00351961234567@….

Thank you very much!

In the last comment I referred to the fact that the contacts had the same alias, but that is not my first suggestion because that one was about grouping contacts with the same protocols - in this case it would be grouping SAPO contacts together and SMS contacts together.

grouping SAPO contacts together and SMS contacts together.

You can group them MANUALLY. But I guess, that like me, you want and automatic way, correct?

comment:6 Changed 11 years ago by 512upload

Correct.

As an example, if I have the groups Friends, Coworkers and VIP, I would get the grouping:

SAPO Friends Coworkers VIP SMS Friends Coworkers VIP

Or as in SAPO Messenger as meta-contacts, having the SAPO and the SMS contacts together inside one alias:

Friends xormlite <IM> <Send SMS> Coworkers VIP

Correcting the last part of the last comment:

Correct.

As an example, if I have the groups Friends, Coworkers and VIP, I would get the grouping:

SAPO

-Friends -Coworkers -VIP

SMS

-Friends -Coworkers -VIP

Or as in SAPO Messenger as meta-contacts, having the SAPO and the SMS contacts together inside one alias:

Friends

-xormlite <IM> <Send SMS> -Coworkers -VIP

In this last variation of the approch to the issue, the automation would be in getting together contacts from all protocols for each one nickname. Note: xormlite can be for example: "xormlite@…" for Google Talk and in MSN "xormlite%google.com@…". Getting these together automatically would also be useful.

I personally prefer the 1st aproach, since for the 2nd aproach one could mix contacts with the same nickname that are not the same people and the user could make that organization while he or she is adding contacts very easily. And the first approach is more intuitive for a user to use.

Image, I now want to send an SMS, I only want to see the group SMS and I won't need to manage both groups (SAPO and SMS) and sub-groups (Friends, Coworkers and VIP).

Why does when I write > or - this board interpretes that as an introduction of a new paragraph?

comment:9 Changed 11 years ago by 512upload

I'm sorry, I meant to say that the board interpretes as if I didn't want to make a new paragraph, which means it ignores I made a new paragraph.

its trac wikiformating http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/WikiFormatting

you can insert code by placing 3 { to open and 3 } to close. example:

 this is code, and i can insert ' \ / >

pidgin moved from having groups be tied to accounts years ago because it was virtually never what users wanted, it also didn't allow people to combine groups across accounts if they wanted to. The current system allows both (albeit only if the groups have different names).

What exactly is the request in this ticket? Is it to go back to having groups be single-account only? Is it to allow hiding of certain 'types' of buddies? Is it something else?

Does adding the relevant buddies into contacts not do what you want and clean up the buddy list window? If not, why not?

It's something different.

Please read: http://plugins.guifications.org/trac/ticket/458

This is a feature suggested for the Pidgin Plugin Pack, but I think it's useful enough to be wanted as a Pidgin feature by default. It this particular example, I would rather have SAPO, GTalk and MSN contacts together and have only two groups of contacts: Chat and SMS.

Selective filtering of the buddy list is not something we support at the moment. It is also incredibly unlikely that we will support filtering by anything other than account, protocol, or status (if we ever move to supporting filtering at all). So unless your SMS buddies are on a specific account or protocol or are in the Mobile status, it is unlikely that you will be able to filter them out.

If the request here is for filtering of the buddy list view then this is at least in part a duplicate of #6807 (and possibly solved by the patch in #5876).

Hello!

If it's in anyway relatively easy to support filtering by account, protocol or status, I guess it will also be easy to support filtering by the expression that is after the @:

@phone.im.sapo.pt @msn.im.sapo.pt @sapo.pt @gmail.com

In this case, @phone.im.sapo.pt are the SMS contacts. I guess it's kinda like a protocol filtering.

Thank you very much.

Best regards,
