#2274 closed defect (fixed)

"User is Typing" GUI defect in Pidgin 2.0.2

Reported by: ThrobbingBrain66 Owned by: seanegan
Milestone: 2.4.1 Component: pidgin (gtk)
Version: 2.0.2 Keywords: user is typing pixel wide line

Description

This bug is the same as bug #308 that I opened 3 months ago but was closed and reopened several times with no resolution ever being arrived at.

To explain the bug better/further: after a "buddy" sends me a message, a small one-pixel wide line appears where the "user is typing" box appears in the conversation window. If I then hover my mouse over the line, a tool tip pops up saying "User is typing." It's as if the icon is always there, even when a user is not typing. I've included several screenshots of different themes to show that the defect is visible in all of them.

I figured that was the problem. Thanks for the clarification.

  • Milestone changed from 2.1.1 to 2.2.0
  • Owner set to seanegan
  • Status changed from new to assigned

I think the best way to do this is to move the notifications to the text widget the way iChat, Google Talk, and I'm sure others do it. This needs to be a 2.2.0 feature.

Is there any improvement in this issue? I've just installed 2.3.1 and this feature still doesn't work ...

2.4 seems to include this change: the "User is typing" notification now appears in the conversation.

I'm sure many users like it but I personally find it frustrating. Every time my chat buddy starts typing someting, this 1 extra line (with the "User is typing" message) appears in the conversation and catches my attention because it seems as if a new message was received.

I prefer the small animated icon in the top-right corner - but if now the "in-conversation" notification is the only option, I prefer not to have any notificaiton. Is there any way to disable it?

I totally agree. In my opinion the best solution is a setting to choose between the new (text) and the old (icon) behaviour, and perhaps no notification at all.
