#2338 closed enhancement (wontfix)

Make spelling suggestions not require extra mouse actions

Description

Choosing a spelling suggestion is much more involved than similar functionality in program like Firefox/Tomcat/Word?, etc. The gold standard here is to click a word and the first elements in the popup menu are the spelling suggestions.

To fix a spelling mistake requires the following steps:

1) Right click to popup a menu 2) Move the mouse to select the Spelling suggestion submenu 3) Move the mouse to click the proper correction.

It may not seem like much of an improvement to just right click and pick, but in practice it makes a huge difference.

Ideally all the suggestions are in the topmost section of the popup menu. Perhaps if this list is too long, there can be a submenu for "More spelling suggestions"?

Ping.

I vote for an improvement of the way spelling suggestions are offered to the user as well. The current cumbersome use-flow is:

  • Left-click on a misspelled word (in order to pute the cursor in it) -> right click -> Suggestions -> correct spelling

Ideally I think left-clicking on a misspelled word should automatically bring the list of suggestions. Use-flow:

  • Left-click on a misspelled word -> suggestions list popup menu

Probably best to leave left click to selection. But there's no reason right click can also move the cursor as well as popup a menu.

Actually Word and Firefox popup the menu based upon the word under the mouse when you right click, but otherwise lease the cursor where it is.

I think this is largely a moot point as none of this is controlled directly by us anyway, GtkSpell is responsible for how the UI works for this.

Are you saying there is no way to customize where, when and how the suggestions are shown?

That is my understanding. The GtkSpell API consists of 5 functions.

Wow! I understand.

So there's an entire class of programs which have this unfortunate behavior which depend on GtkSpell?. Seems like an opportunity for GTKSpell.
