IM message windows text area auto moving

Reported by: sk0t Owned by: seanegan

Version: 2.1.0 Keywords:

Description

In the IM message... there is a problem with the text input area automatically moving with the input of my message. I have notified the developers of GAIM (previous to Pidgin), and as of 2.1.0 (which I have just upgrade too), the problem is still there. I would ask (as I am sure the rest of us would too), that you remove the auto move feature, and let the input area bring up the scroll bars.

This is a serious issue for me, and it might cause me to switch clients.

You mean the input area grows to accomodate extra lines of input? It should only do that to a certain point and then scroll bars will be used and I believe it should revert to your default size on send. Are either or both of those not happening? What about the current situation bothers you so much?

The input area grows to accomodate the extra lines of input, yes. I like to make my IM window very small, to economize space. And when I have the window up, I make the input field the height of one line of text. (Very small). When I type, the input area grows larger (as designed), but it doesnt return to normal, it stays larger and makes my chat window large. I have to resize it after every conversation.

I think it would be great if there was an option to shut this feature off, and just use scroll bars... cause this has caused me so much hassle. I have switched back and forth from Pidgin and Kopete, but I really like Pidgin. I would like this to be resolved so my frustrations dont cause me to find something better (cause frankly there is not).

If it reset itself to your desired size after each message would that be enough?

That would be good enough... although I dont really like the feature (I think it complicated the window by changing the size.)... I would honestly prefer a shutoff feature... but that is your call... I just want this program to be the best, and a few friends of mine who use it, think that this automatic move feature is irritating too.

Sean assigned it to himself, I have no idea what he intends to do I just wanted to figure out the extent of the annoyance.

I am not trying to be a bother here. I am just using this ticket to make a great program even better.

the auto resizing of the input area makes my little IM window large, and then remains the large size without returning back to the way I had it set. This was a problem from GAIM 2 beta 5 (when this autoresize option started). I wasnt going to send a ticket, but small windows are the one thing I love when chatting, and if I cant have it, I will be forced to switch. Everyone has something they use that they take for granted... small windows is mine.

I have just updated from 2.3.1 to 2.4.0 and realized that I am no more able to resize the text input area by dragging its border. This annoys me so much that I'm going back to the previous version. :( (I am otherwise a big fan of Pidgin)

Please give back the option to manually resize the input field's height...
I don' mind if the field auto-resizes when I type in more than what fits in it (as opposed to displaying a scroll-bar), but I really would like to be able to set the "starting" height (that is when the field is empty) to more than one line.

The default height is two lines of text.

I prefer some more space - usually I resize that input area to 6-8 lines high. "Drag to resize" in 2.3.1 is a great feature.

Yes, i agree, the resizing was a good feature. Now its 2 lines extendable to 4 lines but thats too small.

This also really upsets me for some reason, and I feel the need to go back to 2.3.1. Can you just make it configurable?

for me it's not acceptable also ... just downgraded to 2.3.1 ... please, make it configurable ...

Another reverter here also, this feature is terrible, almost considering leaving Pidgin, extreme I know, but still!

I too would prefer the ability to adjust the size of the input textfield as it is personally much more comfortable to have a larger input field.

i think this ticket can be closed? The behaviour of the input area has completly changed in 2.4.0 and will be changed a little bit again in 2.4.1 . (read #4986 for more information/discussion)
