Can't use pidgin using GoogleTalk protocol without a Gmail or Googlemail account

Description

Hi,

I'm not sure if others have found the same thing, but I have been searching the web high and low for an answer to this.

I can use googletalk because I have signed up with google using my personal email address. That personal email address is NOT a gmail or googlemail account. However, I can't seem to get pidgin to work using my email address.

See the google documentation for google apps for your domain and the regular instructions.

ah, herein lies the problem.. the regular instructions don't work for anyone who uses their email address as the login name (since they tell you to strip the @ sign), and i don't use google apps for my domain! So neither of these instructions would be applicable (mind you, i've tried both!)

Your Google username is of the form foo@bar ?

comment:4 Changed 12 years ago by bwoo

yes

comment:5 Changed 12 years ago by deryni

And using that as the screen name in pidgin doesn't work? Can you show us the Debug Window output of your attempting to connect?

bwoo: When you created that account, you were asked to create a username. While the Google Talk client will sign you in if you use your e-mail address, Pidgin will only allow you to login with that username.

You should be able to see that username at https://www.google.com/accounts/ManageAccount

Try clicking on Edit Personal Information and see if you see a non @example.com username. To login to Google Talk, you need to set your Domain to gmail.com and Screenname to that username.

I know, it's very confusing.

I just tried this myself. I get two "usernames." one was my seanegan@… e-mail address I signed up with, and the second was my non-e-mail address username, "seanegn2"

Do you see another username beneath foobar@…?

comment:11 Changed 12 years ago by bwoo

No.. there are no other usernames. I think when you NOW sign up for GoogleTalk?, it makes you create a username. However, since I have had an iGoogle account from their beta days, they have always allowed me to have an account that is simply foobar@….

I just tried the google talk client. I see what you mean now with respects to needing and creating a username. i was given some bad info from a friend who said that I could just use my iGoogle account ... I apologize for putting everyone through this.
