#4365 new enhancement

Accept PurpleCmds in English and local language

Reported by: lucabrivio Owned by: deryni
Milestone: Component: libpurple
Version: 2.3.0 Keywords: Italian, XMPP, help, commands
Cc:

Description

When I type /help affiliate and /help role Pidgin returns me the following messages, respectively: affiliate <utente> <proprietario|admin|membro|escluso|nessuno>: Imposta un'affiliazione per l'utente nella stanza. and role <utente> <moderatore|partecipante|visitatore|nessuno>: Imposta un ruolo per l'utente nella stanza.

Both affiliations and roles should not be translated here, because e.g. affiliate John admin just doesn't work, and so on.

is this still a problem in 2.4.0?

this shouldn't be a problem only with the italian-translation?!!

  • Status changed from closed to reopened

This is almost certainly still a problem given my quick reading of the code. I'm not sure what the best way to fix this is however.

  • Owner changed from lschiere to deryni
  • Status changed from reopened to new

This needs to either have the help output stop being translated or accept both the English and translated versions as input to the command.

This needs to either have the help output stop being translated or accept both the English and translated versions as input to the command.

I think the former is better.

What we should never do is disableing support for English input to this command since localization shall not require users to type different commands. (Users who need to switch between different languages very often might even consider localized hotkeys too much localization while others want localized hotkeys because they don't care about compatiblity between locales.)

I think we should exclude invariant command parameters from translation, not the whole output.

OK, for now I will bring the options back to english in the next version (2.5.0++)

The code should probably be changed to accept both the English and translated versions as input to the command. Non-English users should never see English or be required to type English.

I reverted the options to english in the it.po for 2.5.1 (Ticket #6789).

I'm not sure about the last comment by Mark. To me, console commands are for Pidgin what the shell is for unix: something for the "power user" who generally prefers to have standard, not language-dependent, commands and options. In fact the unix shell commands are always in english (e.g. ls, find, grep,mount,...)

You cannot script the pidgin interface, you can script the shell. It is infinitely more important that shell scripts not break because of language differences than it is that pidgin users be able to use the same command everywhere. That being said, the point Mark was making is that pidgin should accept *both* the English and localized versions of the commands and arguments, which is a reasonable thing to allow people to do.

Given deryni's last comment, should this ticket be changed from Translation to Defect (as it requires a change to Pidgin code, not a translation file)?

  • Component changed from unclassified to libpurple
  • Summary changed from Unexpected localization in Italian translation to Accept PurpleCmds in English and local language
