#4665 new enhancement

File transfers between iChat and Pidgin fail over Bonjour

Reported by: mobius1ski Owned by: datallah
Milestone: Patches welcome Component: Bonjour
Version: 2.3.1 Keywords: ichat, mac, os x, file transfer
Cc: carleeto

When attempting to send a file from Pidgin on Windows XP Home SP 2 to iChat on Mac OS X 10.4.11 via Bonjour, the file transfer immediately fails, and returns the message: "[User] canceled the transfer of [filename]." Conversely, when attempting to send a file from iChat to Pidgin, also over Bonjor, the file transfer request is never received by Pidgin.

  • Milestone set to Patches welcome
  • Type changed from defect to enhancement

Pidgin doesn't support the file transfer method that iChat uses.

Patches to implement it are welcome.

As of Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.1, filetransfers in fact does seem to work in some cases:

Sender Receiver Result
Pidgin 2.3.1 iChat 4.0 Works!
iChat 4.0 Pidgin 2.3.1 Does not work

Too bad. This would be a killer if it "just worked" in all directions :-)

and what about those of us who don't want to install Mac OS X Vista 10.5.1?

I guess that the new iChat added support for SOCKS5 file transfer. I wonder if there is something pidgin can advertise to make iChat send files to us like that too. I don't have access to a machine running this version of iChat to test it.

mobius1ski: As I mentioned earlier, patches to implement the iChat style file transfers are welcome - if someone capable cares enough, then they'll write a patch, otherwise it isn't going to happen.

Just for reference:

From a glance the giggle component shared between telepathy-gabble and -salut seems to implement this (see slides at
