#4823 new defect

No status icons for buddies in XMPP/Jabber chat room

Reported by: kwill Owned by: deryni
Milestone: Component: XMPP
Version: 2.3.1 Keywords: jabber xmpp chat room status icon
Cc: diskin

I use Pidgin for Windows on Vista Home Premium Edition.

I mainly use Pidgin for group chat on XMPP/Jabber-based chat rooms. In these chat rooms the room owner has a flag icon next to their name, and everyone else (including myself) has a contact icon next to their name (looks like this: (((-))) with a large dot instead of a hyphen).

To see their status I have to right-click on them and select info. In other IM clients in the same room on the same server, I instead see their status as an icon (available, away, etc). Is there something I need to do to enable their status icons in Pidgin? Otherwise, this looks like a defect.

Additionally, is it possible to sort them by their status (in the chat room list)?

  • Owner changed from nwalp to deryni

This isn't a defect per-se, it is also not possible in pidgin (that is there isn't some checkbox you missed or anything). pidgin doesn't show that information in the room list (probably because most/many protocols don't support it for room members). It should be possible to add this, but would likely require a slight overhaul of how chat room member lists are handled internally (which is something that is desperately needed anyway, ticket #4835 which could also benefit from the same overhaul).

Hello, is any progress expected here?

I wrote a plugin showing participant's status icon in chat room.

  • for XMPP protocol.
  • This plugin replaces icons looks like (((-))) with status icons.
  • Showing status icons or original can be toggled by menu.
