There is no icon in the windows taskbar for conversations with offline/invisible buddies.

I'm using Windows 2000 Professional SP4.

ok for xp it works fine.

This is related to Windows 2000's inability to display icons 16bit color icons. This is a duplicate report, but I can't find the original report right now.
