#5220 new enhancement

Pidgin does not have docking or autohide in Linux

Reported by: Ketsuban Owned by:
Milestone: Patches welcome Component: pidgin (gtk)
Version: 2.2.1 Keywords: pidgin docking autohide linux

The Windows build of Pidgin has a facility where the buddy list window can be docked to the side of the screen for easy reference. This feature does not exist in Linux, and is highly desirable.

In addition, Pidgin does not support automatically hiding the docked buddy list window when not in use; this is a feature of other instant-messaging programs which comes in extremely useful for saving screen real-estate, and should be implemented.

There are a number of reasons pidgin doesn't support this on linux, the first of which is that only 'recently' has there even be a standard for reserving space at all (let alone one that is commonly supported). Further, a number of X window managers are significantly more capable than Windows is of actually managing windows and as such are capable of doing this sort of docking and hiding themselves (which is a much better way to do it because then each application doesn't need the same code).

It would be possible to have a plugin handle the docking parts of things, given a window manager that understands the protocol for it. Having a plugin handle auto-hiding is also possible. I would sooner see those created then add code to pidgin for it since I personally don't believe those features belong in applications most of the time.
