Pidgin cannot send carons

Reported by: eskim Owned by: lschiere
Milestone: Component: unclassified
Version: 2.4.2 Keywords: lanugage,caron

Caron is a little V over certain letters (in Slovenian: Č, Š, Ž)

I've used several versions of pidgin and it can display all carons OK, but some friends tell me that they can't see carons my pidgin sends. We tested this over MSN protocol. Don't know how to fix it. I didn't find any similar threads or any settings in pidgin (to enable UTF-8 or whatever).

Thanks again.

What do you mean your friends can't see them? Do they not get the message at all? Are those characters missing entirely? Do they see boxes? Do they see them garbled in some other fashion? There is no ability to 'turn on UTF-8' in pidgin because pidgin is always UTF-8 internally (and over protocols that support that).

What clients are your friends who have this problem using?

Pidgin displays carons OK, being mine or freind's. But friends say when I send letters like č,š,ž they see something like an lowercase L or |. Friends use Windows Live Messenger.

  • What language version of WLM and Windows are your friends using? I suppose Slovenian (please correct me if I am wrong here).
  • What do your friends exactly see? Do they see two broken characters instead of one character with a caron or does the number of charateers stay the same? Are other characters getting lost (e.g. the next character after a special character)? Please post the exact characters that they see instead of Č, č, Š, š, Ž and ž.

They use various combinations, mostly use both English. They say that they see a | or a little square. What is funny is that this doesn't always happen. Mostly it's when I use carons in a word, but if I write just caron separately they say they can see them nicely.

You said that they see little squares and that all broken characters look the same. I suppose that this is not an encoding problem. I suppose that your carons are sent correctly but the receiving client can't display them because they are missing in the font that is being used.

If this is true, your carons should reappear when your friend sends the broken characters back to you.

Well, I said to a couple of them to copy-paste it back and they say that suddenly they can see carons, or the sent message gets to me properly... So there must be an error on MSN's side... Thanks anyways guys :)
