#6276 closed defect

insane memory consumption

Reported by: laurov Owned by:
Milestone: Component: pidgin (gtk)
Version: 2.5.5 Keywords:
Cc: HyperPete

Description

On Ubuntu 8.04, with Pidgin installed via apt, sometimes it goes crazy with memory consumption. This morning I've had it on for about 2 hours without sending/receiving any messages. Then my system starts paging because Pidgin is taking up over 700Mb RAM. Screenshot shows less, but still...

Are you using any third-party pidgin plugins? Is pidgin doing anything specific when you see this happen?

Sorry I didn't respond earlier. I don't have any 3rd party plugins installed. Only default install from aptitude. I'll be messaging some, not even a lot when the memory goes crazy.

I have the same problem, existed in 2.4.1, continues to be a problem in 2.5.2. I just updated to kubuntu 8.10, this has been occurring with ubuntu 8.04 and is still occurring. I have been disabling plugins one by one (no 3rd party) but it's still occurring.

Although this will occur in an idle state after an hour or so, messaging will rapidly increase VM used, and it is apparently not released.

It seems that this bug is related to gtkspell. If the pidgin spell check is disabled, pidgin uses only 15MB. See the attached valgind log (valgrind -v --show-reachable=yes --leak-check=full /usr/bin/pidgin).

Is this still an issue in Pidgin 2.5.8?

Replying to bernmeister:

Is this still an issue in Pidgin 2.5.8?

It stills an issue in Ubuntu 9.04, Pidgin 2.5.5.

  • Version changed from 2.4.1 to 2.5.8

laurov: If you disable spell-checking, does that help with the memory leaks?
