Pasting username into "Add Buddy" dialog from Excel 2007 returns user invalid

Description

Copying a username (in my case an MSN email address) from Excel 2007 and pasting it into the Add Buddy dialog returns the following error:

Unable to add "<email address>
".

The username specified is invalid.

Typing in the same address by hand works fine as does paste in plain text from other applications. My guess is that Excel has some kind of formatting attached to the text but Pidgin should strip that out on paste.

did you check if there is a space character behind the mail-adress?

I did, yes. I tried this with several different addresses and the only thing that worked was to paste the address into Notepad (or similar) and then paste it into the Add Buddy dialog.

  • pending changed from 0 to 1

Is that the exact error message? Because there is clearly a newline at the end of the e-mail address, if the ending quote truly is as in your example.
