#6313 closed defect (wontfix)

Cannot join channel when set to AUTO-JOIN although public

Reported by: Cube Owned by: elb
Milestone: Component: IRC
Version: 2.4.3 Keywords: auto, join, registration, cannot, channel

I set #blender as autojoin, so I join it everytime I start Pidgin. Every other channel, such as #pidgin, works fine.

Just with #blender, it always tells me that:

Cannot join #blender: Registration is required.

You need to be identified to join that channel

When I close that message and join #blender manually, everything works fine.

  • Resolution set to wontfix
  • Status changed from new to closed

Presumably you also have Pidgin set to auto-identify.

This is a race which we can't do anything about, without Pidgin understanding the identification process on various IRC networks. Once Pidgin perceives that the login process is complete, it starts joining channels; however, if you have to use an IRC helper plugin to identify, it will not be identified by this point. Even on networks such as freenode, where Pidgin can identify by way of the regular IRC password, this will tend to happen because it takes the network much longer to identify you than sign you in.

As the mechanisms for identifying to services on the various networks are all nonstandard and vary widely, I don't foresee us doing anything about this.
