And, I forgot to mention, pidgin can be running for a while, then suddenly it just vanishes. then when I try to start it again, i starts to connect, and just disappears, without any warning.

I have been having this exact problem as well.

That is crashing in the facebook plugin, disable your facebook account and it should stop. Report this to the facebook plugin author.

It's been reported and apparently is resolved by removing your Facebook plugin and installing the updated version, 1.29.
