#7357 new enhancement

Add user/search for user enhancement

Reported by: im_root Owned by: deryni
Milestone: Component: XMPP
Version: 2.5.2 Keywords: Active Directory
Cc:

Description

Currently using 2.5.2 in an enterprise setting with Openfire 3.6.0 as our XMPP server authenticating against Active Directory. Would like: 1) the "search for users", "search results" to be sortable either by JID, Username or Name fields.

2) the ability to keep the Search Results Window Open and add multiple users, instead of having to close the search results each time, then lookup users.

3) Better integration into either Microsoft Outlook email directory or Active Directory.

Ideally this should be three tickets, as it's three separate requests.

What kind of Outlook integration do you want? I doubt we're particularly interested in integrating with Outlook directly, but someone could probably write a plugin similar to the Evolution integration plugin that currently exists.

Also, what specifically do you want for Active Directory integration? Active Directory is LDAP with some kerberos thrown in, which is used as a data store and authentication mechanism--it's not something that really falls within the IM application space. If you're looking for roster integration with the directory, that's something that your Openfire server should be doing.

For the "search for users" or "search results" part of your request, are you 'picturing' a separate window where you could search through all your contacts in pidgin and it would list all contacts (online/offline) with columns (Name, Alias, JID/username, email address) etc?

I was assuming he meant that in the Search Results dialog returned when searching for users in a Jabber User Directory he would like the ability to add users without dismissing the dialog. Which (now that I look at that dialog) seems like a reasonable request to me.

Replying to rekkanoryo:

RE: Outlook Integration Similar to Outlook's New Mail Message, where you would File->New Mail Message-> To: -> Select Names, and you could pull down your company's email global address list or the Outlook Address Book Contact List

RE: Active Directory Integration In a corporate environment, either the Add Buddy or Accounts->Search for Users, would be similar to the "Find People"->"Active Directory" search where one could add to Buddy List.

RE: Search for users Here are the steps: Accounts-> {select account here} -> Search for Users -> Enter a User Directory -> Search Directory ->Advanced User Search, at "Search:" enter * (with Username, Name, Email all checked) -> Search Results all displayed.. At this point, it would be nice to just sort alphabetically either A-Z or Z-A in any of the columns (JID, Username, Name, Email) by just clicking the Column Header (within the current window). Currently, the Search Results (at least my results) are not alphabetically sorted.

Thanks for the response. If you want me to open seperate tickets, I would be glad to do so.

That is one of the ideas (2) the ability to keep the Search Results Window Open and add multiple users, instead of having to close the search results each time, then lookup users.) The other option would just be able to sort alphabetically either A-Z or Z-A from the Column Header field.

Yes, sorry I was specifically responding to charding and not restating both of the ideas. Sorting is also something that should be allowed.

Your request for Outlook integration is something that should be handled by a plugin like the Evolution integration plugin that currently exists. This is not a plugin I think we have any interest in creating or maintaining ourselves though.

As to the AD integration, a plugin could be written to integrate with any random (user specified) AD server which could do the same sort of things as the Outlook/Evolution? integration plugins I mentioned above. But specifically with regard to the Search for Users feature, as rekkanoryo said, it is the servers job to control what backend data is searched when you perform the search and as such you should talk to your server administrators to get it connected to the correct AD source.
