#7544 new defect

Account not identified for unsolicited IMs received

Reported by: ppww Owned by: deryni
Milestone: Component: pidgin (gtk)
Version: 2.5.2 Keywords:

Description

I occasionally receive unsolicited IMs (from individuals who are not on my buddy list). When this happens, the protocol is identified (by a small icon in the title bar of the IM window). But the account they have sent to does not appear anywhere. This is important context information that I'd like to know before responding (if at all).

For buddies on my list, I can pause the mouse on their status indicator in the IM window, and it shows, among other things, the protocol and which of my accounts they are sending to. Presumably the same account will be used if I choose to respond, block, etc. But for non-buddies, there is no pop-up, and there seems to be no way to find out this information.

I am using 2.5.2 for Windows, and this occurs with at least aim & yahoo. Haven't tried multiple accounts on other protocols, but it may not be limited to just those.

Update: I can find the account by choosing Conversation->Add..., and the correct one appears as the default choice. But there should be a more obvious way.

I see two ways to address this:

  1. (I prefer this one) Make the infopane have a tooltip for people not on the buddy list and include the account information there.
  2. Add the account to the infopane as if it were a status message, with the protocol in parentheses. I really dislike this idea, but it would do the job.

We should definitely have tooltips on the infopane even for non-buddies.

I would also have sworn that at one point you could pull down the Send To menu and see the current account, even if there was only one. Am I making that up? If not I think that would at least be something useful for us to bring back.

That used to work that way when we had the "Send As" menu, but that was broken by the model that the Send To menu introduced.

We tag the entries in the Send To list with the accounts they come from (in case of duplicates, etc.) that is what I was referring to, not the fact that we used to list local accounts directly.

Yes, but for people not on the buddy list the Send To menu is not created and not clickable.

Right, I notice that we seem not to enable the Send To menu when there is only one choice at this point. I thought we used to, perhaps we ought to do so (again)? Regardless, I think making sure we have a tooltip is likely the more correct solution.
