#8255 new enhancement

Enhancement: Clear Scrollback should have a query by default, as it cannot be undone

Reported by: magnuss Owned by: deryni
Milestone: Component: unclassified
Version: 2.4.1 Keywords:
Cc:

Description

This is a future request from https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/250075.

Original description:

Dangerously placed next to Save As... in the Conversation menu, Clear Scrollback (Ctrl-L) cannot be undone, though there is a high risk for accidental selection of this item when trying to save the scrollback e.g. on mobile devices with imprecise trackpoints/-pads or certain touchscreens.

Therefore it should have an "Are you sure?" dialog (possibly with the option of disabling the latter for the future).

Otherwise, only the most experienced users will be able to immediately salvage texts lost this way from RAM nonetheless e.g. by something like sudo strings /proc/kcore | grep -B 100 -A 20 recent_unique_keyword

It was reported against pidgin 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2.1, but it seems to be the same for 1:2.5.2-0ubuntu1.

I know of no application that possesses a confirmation dialog for an action like this. I will grant you that I believe giving that action a default binding is a bad idea, I will further grant that having the clear and save items next to one another is sub-optimal, I will even further note that I think the wording of 'Save as' and 'Clear scrollback' is oddly lacking in parallelism.

I think separating the items is reasonable, I think removing the default binding is reasonable, I think reworking the wording is ideal, but I think adding a confirmation dialog is excessive. I think a patch which allowed for the action to be undone (perhaps ideally with a timeout) would be acceptable though.

One of the reasons I think this is less dire of a situation than you have made out is that this is not at all an issue for anyone who uses the logging functionality, even if those people delete their logs periodically.

Hello can someone tell if this will be fixed or not? This just to keep orderdered all the pidgin bugs tracked on Launchpad and avoid wasting of time? Thanks Fabio
