#8951 new enhancement

feature-request: default irc-realname other than "purple"

Reported by: sdx23 Owned by: elb
Milestone: Component: IRC
Version: 2.5.5 Keywords: realname purple default

Description

this feature request is about the standard realname used for irc. this is up to now "purple" as long as the user doesn't change it. and many users don't change it.

ops in irc-channels sometimes encounter people doing bad things, spamming, trolling, starting flamewars or whatever. in some cases hostmask-bans are not effective and realname-bans the only thing which helps. but due to many people using "purple" as realname because they dont change the default a realname-ban on "purple" is not a good idea.

so in short my suggestion is to use something else than "purple" so that not all the pidgin-users(which don't change the default settings) have the same realname. for example "purple-$USER" or "$USER".

this would help irc-ops a lot

The IRC realname used to default to the user's real name from the passwd entry, but this was removed for privacy reasons. purple-$USER is a possibility, as we already use $USER for the username field by default.

How to change the user's real name param manually? I want to manually change 'purple' to something else; thanks

Check the advanced account settings tab, it has a realname entry.
