#9062 new defect

Pidgin uses Jabber ID rather than Nickname or other vcard information

Reported by: periferral Owned by: deryni
Milestone: Component: XMPP
Version: 2.5.5 Keywords: vcard nickname contact list
Cc: rjh427

I'm using ejabberd as my jabber server. When I search for users of my server, I am able to find users and the following information is displayed. JabberID, Nickname, Name, UserID and Email

I'd like to use the Nickname as the default in the contact list. However, once I select a user and add to my list, the user name on the contact list shows up as the jabber ID rather than the nickname. I have set the nickname to be Firstname Lastname (John Doe). However, on my contact list, the user shows up as jdoe@servername instead.

On a similar note, the issue also appears to apply to my own name as well. On a chat window, my name shows up as

However, I can do to accounts-manage accounts-modify account and set a local alias and then it is fine.

It would be nice if at both places, we could use the nickname as the default (or a way for users to set it to some field)

  • Owner changed from lschiere to deryni

The XMPP prpl currently only uses the JID returned from the search but should be made to use the Nickname, Full Name, First and/or Last Names as the suggested alias when they exist.

The second issue is that we do not (as far as I know) use the user's vcard/nickname information as a value for the local display, if in fact we don't, we should.

There has been some improvement in our use of the vCard/nickname information as a displayed alias, we still need to actually try to use any extra searched fields.

Hi, I habe similar Problem. In my chat window my JID is always displayed instead of my nickname. I already tried re-setting nickname. Entering my nickname in the User-Info fields Nickname and the other *Name fields. the Aliases of others are displayed correctly. A friend just installed pidgin (current Version Pidgin 2.10.4 (libpurple 2.10.4) 03f3e779309e683d092706d76a5253c6794d3a66 like me) and Aliases are displayed. I can't find any setting which changes/corrects this.

This is still the case in 2.11

In addition to the visual aspect, the only way to change this is with the local alias, which means it doesn't persist/sync across installs, nor can it be stored/updated on the server by any means.

I would say a better behavior would be

  1. Attempt to check vcard on login (and periodically)
  2. If local alias is set, display that locally
  3. If local alias is blank, check vcard for Nickname field, and if set, use that value
  4. If Nickname field is unset check first and last name, if set, use this value
  5. If first and last name are unset, use JID

Let me see... this bug was opened 9 years ago. I'm running v2.10.9 on Ubuntu, as of the last comment there's still no change in v2.11 of the program.

This is either exceedingly difficult in some way or there is no interest in making the change.

Has anyone come up with a patch or other workaround?
