Tray icon should show if it is disconnected.

Description

I am entering this suggestion after listening to the Windows weekly podcast!... I've not used Windows for years, but I thought it might be interesting to catch up! There was a discussion about IM tools, and the reason given not to use Pidgin was that the tray icon does not show if the connection is lost (Eg. if you log on from another computer etc).. I agree, and this would obviously benefit Lihux and any other versions...

  • Status changed from new to pending

We display when the status is intended to be offline, we do not display when we have a reconnection attempt pending, we do display when a reconnection attempt is occuring. The reason being we display the currently requested status, a pending reconnection attempt is an error situation we are attempting to fix and as such does not require display, an ongoing connection does warrant displaying.

It is true, however, that if reconnections continually fail the user may never know it, but knowing it would only be of minor use as it is unlikely they will be able to fix it (if their internet connection is in fact broken, and if it isn't broken then pidgin should eventually reconnect).

Which "Windows weekly podcast" are you referring to?

The podcast I was talking about was the TWiT Windows Weekly podcast with Leo Laporte (http://twit.tv/ww), I spent an hour today playing it at 150% speed, but I can't find the point where they mentioned it... I think it was in episode 106 or 107.

The scenario was, where a person has several computers and turns "auto-reconnect" off... there's nothing worse than connecting from your laptop while you're out only to find that your home machine keeps disconnecting you... so realistically, you have to turn off auto reconnect if you have several machines.

So, if you connect from another machine, then go back to your main machine, and forget, you may never know that it's not connected if you don't open the buddy list window. This is where they were suggesting that the tray icon should have some way to draw attention to the fact that it is waiting for you to click "reconnect"...

Pidgin will not automatically reconnect an account that has been disconnected due to signing on elsewhere.

I'm still not convinced we need an icon for disconnected.

So, if I open my laptop to shut it down after having left it on suspend... or I use my netbook to read an email on the train, and pidgin connects, thus disconnecting my main machine... I would want some indication when I return to my main machine that it was no-longer connected.

TBH, I posted this request in direct response to the comments made in a mainstream Windows user Podcast, where both the presenters (one of whom was Paul Thurrott of "Windows Vista Secrets") agreed that this was a reason not to use Pidgin. I just felt that that was useful feedback.

We do not handle the case where we have disabled an account due to a fatal error (this includes being signed on elsewhere) as well as we could, however I am uncertain what we should be displaying to make this better. Displaying a disconnected icon only makes sense if all accounts are disconnected, displaying a connecting icon is absolutely incorrect, displaying an 'inconsistent' icon (whatever that may be) would be the best but would leave people potentially unclear as to what to do (though upon opening the buddy list it would be made more obvious as the error mini dialog would be visible).

Did the presenters in the podcast discuss what they would rather pidgin do? Did they discuss what other clients do that makes this better? Do you have specific thoughts as to what could be done that would correctly capture what the status icon is indicating, covers all the cases that have been mentioned, and 'solves' this problem? I don't. I'd love to get the podcasters feedback on this since they appear to have strong feelings about this and probably have some behaviour they prefer, I don't know their communities well but if you are involved there are all feel free to mention this ticket there (and or direct anyone interested in discussing this to come talk to us).
