XMPP Pings must be made configurable for users

Reported by: niraj19july Owned by: deryni
Milestone: Component: XMPP
Version: 2.5.6 Keywords:

The issue was raised in Ticket#9015. I am raising a separate ticket for the issue as suggested in ticket#9015.

Users get disconnected from gtalk(Ticket#5278) and other XMPP servers. This happens when Pidgin doesn't get the reply for its ping request. I feel that the reply is not received because server might be slow and hence could not send back the response within 30 sec but this leads to the disconnection by Pidgin. Please note that server can be slow for arbitrary number of reasons and slow server doesn't mean that it will never process your request. Disconnection from client is a pure loss of service from the end-user perspective. I think users must be given configuration option to disable these pings completely. Alternatively, ping interval and timeout of these pings can be made configurable so that user can choose it appropriately to avoid disconnection from the server.

Of course, there will be default value for all of these settings but users must be able to edit all the default settings.
